Preparing for Tomorrow’s Fraud: Offensive Security Research on Merchant Payment Hardware

In the payment ecosystem, the most damaging attacks often exploit the gap between certified functionality and real-world offensive opportunity. This talk shares a case study of ADYEN (PCI PPO), a payment service provider, that invested early in deep security research on its merchant payment hardware. In collaboration with PCA Cyber Security (PCI APO) an experienced offensive security partner specializing in payment device internals, the company built a proactive program focused on realistic attack paths, exploitability, and defensive readiness. We show how this work helps turn technical findings into decisions that strengthen products, protect merchants, and defend against fraud before it is used by malicious actors.
